How Do You Dig Deep?

This morning’s reading is from Brene Brown’s, The Gifts of Imperfection. Brown’s second chapter is about ‘Cultivating Self-Compassion.’ At the end of this chapter she challenges us to answer her question, “How do you dig deep?” She says we need to dig deep by 3 steps: ‘Get Deliberate, Get Inspired and Get Going.”
‘Get Deliberate’ is about self-compassion. When I read that, I thought to myself that I’m pretty good at that, however, when she writes about what gets in her way of self-compassion such as self-judgement, isolation and overidentification, I realized I’m not quite as self-compassionate as I thought I was. I especially am rather skilled at self-judgment whenever I make mistakes, whenever I offend or disappoint someone. I’ve become less harsh with myself, but I still fall into that trap.
I love Brown’s reference to Leonard Cohen’s song “Anthem”, “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” This line is so very humanizing. We are all imperfect and we’ll never close up all the cracks so let’s celebrate our imperfections as a human race. Let’s live each day inspired not only with our cracks but also with the beauty that shines through these cracks.
Lastly, Brown says, “Get Going.” We’re all doing the very best we can and we need to say to ourselves that we are grateful for one more day of making a difference in the lives of people we touch today. “Today, I’m going to believe that showing up is enough.”
I wish you an amazing day of showing up and enjoy each moment as if it’s your last today!
