Self-Regulation Strategies Students Can Use At School

1. Breathe – Take 6 SLOW/DEEP – In through nose, out through mouth.
2. Ask to deliver books to the library or another classroom.
3. Invent a secret hand signal with teacher communicating I need help.
4. Move away from what or who is distracting me.
5. Write down my thoughts or questions if the teacher can’t help now.
6. Volunteer to help tidy the classroom.
7. Ask permission to take a walk as previously agreed upon.
8. Tell myself a positive affirmation or mantra.
9. Journal or write a letter.
10. Think of and write 3 things I am grateful for.
11. Count to 10 and back in coordination with my breath.
12. Push against the wall as hard as I can and then relax my body.
13. Place my hands over my ears and breathe slowly & deeply listening to the sound that my breath makes.
14. Hug myself deeply and breath in and out 3 times.
15. Zoom in on my senses: 5 things I see, 4 things I feel, 3 things I hear, 2 things I smell, and 1 thing I taste.
