Habit 1: Be Proactive

This week I’ve had fun sharing Sean Covey’s chapter 1 of his book, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. This book is a lot of fun with 7 different characters, each written as a story to help teach each of the 7 Habits.

The first chapter is Bored! Bored! Bored! It’s a perfect story about being bored and thinking its everyone else’s job to get you unbored. Of course, it teaches kids that it’s their own job to be proactive.

ACTIVITY:

Choose one or all of the following “Baby Steps” for your students after reading the story. Or if you don’t have the book, do these anyway.

  1. The next time you feel boarded, do something nice for someone else, like Sammy did for Allie.
  2. Try doing something today that you’ve always been scared to do. Make a new friend, raise your hand in class, or clean the toilet.
  3. The next time you get mad and want to say something mean or rude, bit your tongue instead and don’t say it.
  4. If you do something wrong, say you’re sorry before someone asks you to apologize and think of what you might do next time, so you don’t make the same mistake.
